designACE- your daily resource for team-building.

Greetings, fellow curious minds and starry-eyed explorers! It's no surprise that UFO sightings constantly make headlines. However, the recent attention from the House Oversight Committee regarding allegations of dead aliens, crashed spacecraft, and a secret government program indicates how curiosity goes far beyond Reddit and YouTube.

With the cosmos buzzing with newfound attention and our innate curiosity reaching astronomical heights, it's time to ponder the possibility of encountering intelligent beings beyond Earth. Picture the scenario: You find yourself face to face with an extraterrestrial visitor, and the moment's thrill leaves you lost for words.

Fear not, cosmic conversationalists, for we've got your back with a celestial arsenal of icebreaker questions!

As we navigate the uncharted territories of our minds and the universe, we've curated five thought-provoking icebreakers that will transcend language barriers and forge connections that defy the bounds of space and time.

If you could exchange technology or knowledge with Earth, what would you be interested in learning from us?

Inquiring about potential knowledge exchanges can foster interstellar cooperation and mutual growth. Understanding what an alien civilization desires to learn from us allows us to explore shared interests and bridge cultural gaps. We hope this will pave the way for a harmonious intergalactic exchange.

Follow-Up Questions:

  • What technological advancements have you made that you'd be willing to share with us?

  • Are there specific fields of science or arts on Earth that intrigue your civilization?

Andrew's take

"As someone who grew up on X-Files, Star Wars, and Start Trek, the awesome technology always captivated me. If I had to pick, I'd want to experience the Star Trek Transporter and see what being atomized and reformed feels like. My second answer would be a Star Wars droid. I'd love to party with C-3PO."

What's the most intriguing aspect of human culture that you've encountered so far?

Understanding an alien's perspective on human culture opens doors to cultural appreciation and intercultural dialogue. This question allows us to showcase the diversity of human civilization and learn how it compares to the customs and traditions of distant planets.

Follow-Up Questions:

  • Are there similarities between human culture and your own civilization's practices?

  • Is there any aspect of human culture that surprised or challenged your preconceptions?

Christine's take

"There are so many astonishing moments in world history, art, and architecture. So instead of debating if I should show them the Taj Mahal or Niagra Falls, I'd share some recent pop history. Two tickets to the Taylor Swift Era tour, please."

What would it be if you had to describe your home planet in three words?

Asking an alien to describe their home planet in three words provides intriguing insights into their world's essence and atmosphere. The brevity of the response encourages clarity and reveals the unique characteristics of their civilization.

Follow-Up Questions:

  • What makes your home planet stand out among other celestial bodies?

  • How does your planet's environment influence your species' way of life?

Christine's take

"I'd describe the Earth as Magical, Complex, and Inspiring."

Andrew's take

"The Earth is Vibrant, Blue, Home"

What's the coolest interstellar vehicle you've ever piloted?

An alien's experience with interstellar travel can be mind-boggling and enlightening. Learning about their spacecraft opens discussions about space exploration, propulsion technology, and the vastness of the cosmos.

Follow-Up Questions:

  • How does your interstellar technology compare to Earth's space travel capabilities?

  • Have you explored distant galaxies or neighbouring star systems with your spacecraft?

Andrew's take

"I remember watching The Day the Earth Stood Still, the classic from 1951, and thinking a circular spacecraft was so sleek. The curves of the ship made like nothing I had ever seen. The next time I felt that was watching Star Wars, The Phantom Menace. Queen Amidala's J-type 327 Nubian royal starship was shiny and looked like liquid mercury sailing through space. Definitely, a ship I'd love to hitch a ride on.

Have you encountered any peculiar Earth customs or traditions that puzzled or amused you?

Humorous and peculiar experiences often foster camaraderie and understanding between cultures. Learning about the alien's perspective on our customs creates a friendly atmosphere and allows us to reflect on the quirks of our society.

Follow-Up Questions:

  • What's the most unique Earth tradition you've come across?

  • Did any Earth customs remind you of practices from your home planet?

Christine's take:

"I've always wondered what Aliens would make of our love for sports and celebrities. After all, if they've mastered interstellar travel, they must have a whole other set of values and interests. Instead of tuning in to watch the Kardashians, they're probably more interested in the latest technological advancements or the latest breakthroughs in space exploration."

In Conclusion

We don't need to venture into the cosmos to spark an interesting conversation. I think of one of my favourite quotes.

"... the prejudices people feel about each other disappear when they get to know each other." James T. Kirk

So use these questions with our earthbound brothers and sisters. Armed with these icebreaker questions, you can open pathways to dialogue and mutual exploration.

After all, it's in the conversations we share that the true essence of our cosmic interconnectedness shines through.
